Why Detox Is Making You Feel Worse

Many of my clients who experience symptoms like acne, weight gain, bloating, exhaustion, and even menstrual cycle issues believe they need to detox.

But what they don’t realize is that their body is already detoxing.

Your body has built-in systems that are constantly processing and eliminating things through your liver, gut, and kidneys without you having to think about it.

It’s happening in the background all the time.

And yet detox has somehow become an entire industry, synonymous with doing more:

  • More supplements

  • More cleanses

  • More protocols

  • More restriction

That approach just doesn’t work.

Because the most important question isn’t: what else should I add? It’s: what is your body missing that’s preventing it from detoxing well in the first place?

Detox is a multi-step sequence

Detox isn’t just about getting toxins out. It’s a process your body moves through in a very specific order:

  • processing (mainly in the liver)

  • transforming toxins into a usable form

  • eliminating them through the gut and other pathways

If that last step isn’t working well, things don’t just disappear – they stay in circulation. This will make you feel even worse.

You might notice:

  • your skin breaking out more

  • digestion slowing down

  • energy dropping

  • hormones feeling more reactive

This is something I see a lot with conventional detox kits.

They push your body to process toxins faster, but don’t support your ability to actually eliminate them.

The first step of detox

Before anything can be eliminated, your body has to process toxins first.

This mainly happens in the liver, where toxins are broken down and then prepared to be safely cleared out.

Toxins need to be converted into a form your body can actually eliminate.

If they’re processed but not properly prepared for elimination, they can start to build up – which is where certain symptoms can start to manifest.

That’s when you start to notice things like fatigue, brain fog, skin flare-ups, menstrual issues, or more general inflammation.

Which is why what happens next matters just as much…

The gut’s role in detox

Your liver does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to processing toxins, but your gut is what actually gets them out of your body. So if your gut isn’t functioning well, detox doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to.

This is especially important when it comes to hormones.

Take estrogen, for example. Your body processes it, packages it up for elimination, and sends it to the gut to be cleared out.

But if that elimination step isn’t happening efficiently, estrogen doesn’t just leave your body – it can get reabsorbed and recirculate.

That’s when you start to see symptoms like:

  • PMS

  • acne

  • heavier or irregular cycles

  • mood swings

  • fertility struggles

So you could be supporting “detox” all day long, but if your gut isn’t on board you’re not actually clearing anything effectively.

A better way to think about detox

Instead of asking, “What should I remove?” it’s often more helpful to ask:

“What does my body need more of right now?”

For most people, that comes down to a few key things:

1. Supporting elimination through your gut

If your body isn’t consistently eliminating, everything else backs up. This is often the biggest bottleneck I see.

Your body might be processing toxins, but if your digestion is off or you’re not eliminating regularly, those toxins don’t actually leave your body – they get recirculated.

So this looks like making sure digestion is working well and that your body is clearing things out consistently.

2. Making sure your body has the nutrients it needs

Detox is a nutrient-dependent process. Your body relies on amino acids, vitamins, and minerals to process and clear toxins properly.

If you’re depleted (common with stress, restrictive dieting, long-term birth control use, pregnancy/postpartum) your body simply doesn’t have the resources to keep up.

And when that happens, detox slows down.

3. Supporting your nervous system

Your body isn’t going to prioritize detox if it doesn’t feel safe.

When you’re in a constant stress response, digestion slows down, elimination becomes less efficient, and your body shifts into survival mode.

So even if you’re doing all the “right” things, your body may not be in a place where it can actually use them.

4. Looking at the bigger picture when needed

Sometimes it’s not just one thing. If symptoms are persistent, it’s usually a sign there’s something deeper going on – whether that’s foundational health issues, gut imbalances, hormone shifts, or nutrient deficiencies.

And this is where taking a more personalized, root-cause approach makes a big difference.

If something feels off

When your body’s natural detox process is working well:

  • your energy stabilizes

  • your skin starts to clear

  • your digestion feels more consistent

  • your hormones feel less reactive

If you’ve tried to detox and it didn’t work, it usually means something deeper was being missed.

Most of the time, it comes back to your gut, your stress load, or your body simply not having what it needs to complete the process – and when you’re just adding in more cleanses or supplements without addressing that, it won’t do much.

That’s where having a clearer understanding of what’s actually going on in your body makes all the difference.

If something doesn’t feel right, it’s worth paying attention to.

And if you’ve been trying to piece things together on your own and still feel stuck, it might be time to take a more personalized approach that looks at your full picture.
